Creating Meaning
Tradition is not something we inherit only to preserve. It stays alive when we study it, question it, sing it, retell it and allow it to speak in new ways.
My creative work grows from the meeting of Jewish tradition with African experience, music, poetry, history and the questions of our time. Some projects begin with an ancient text. Others begin with a melody, an encounter, a place or an idea that asks to be brought to life.
Writing and Ideas
I write about Judaism, spirituality, society, history, interfaith encounter and the human search for meaning.
My work includes articles, essays, teaching materials, poetry, liturgy and longer-form projects. I also contribute to publications and collaborative works, and help individuals and organisations give clear and engaging form to ideas that matter to them.
Writing allows us to preserve memory, examine inherited stories and make room for new ones.
Music and Performance
Music has always been part of my life and my work as a rabbi.
I sing, compose and create performances that bring together prayer, storytelling, poetry and songs from different cultures and traditions. These may take the form of an intimate musical gathering, a concert, a festival programme, a commemorative event or a creative contribution to a larger occasion.
Music can cross boundaries that words alone cannot. It can open a gathering, carry a prayer, awaken memory and bring people into a shared experience.
Talks and Public Programmes
A good public programme does more than present information. It creates an encounter.
I develop and present talks, conversations, performances and educational programmes for communities, schools, universities, cultural institutions, festivals and organisations.
Themes may include Jewish thought and history, religion and public life, spirituality, South Africa, Israel and Palestine, interfaith relations, identity, memory and cultural heritage. Each programme is shaped for the people in the room and the conversation we hope to begin.
Cultural and Collaborative Projects
Some ideas need more than a lecture or a written page.
I work with artists, musicians, educators, faith leaders, communities and organisations to develop cultural projects that bring together learning, creativity and human connection.
These may include exhibitions, publications, concerts, ceremonies, festivals, educational experiences, heritage projects or new forms that emerge through collaboration.
A project may begin with a clear plan or simply with a question worth exploring.
